Pawsome:
Case study
Pawsome is a support app for a local animal shelter.
The app targets people who want to volunteer at the animal shelter or visit pets, and need to be able to schedule walks and choose the dog in advance.
Platforms:
Mobile App
Role:
UX designer leading a support app
Project duration:
February 2023 to May 2023
Problem
and Goal
Volunteers need to schedule dog walks in advance to manage their time and be able to interact with different dogs.
The goal was to design a support app for the animal shelter that allows users to easily schedule and choose the dog they want to walk.
Responsibilities:
User research, conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.
This was a prompt created within the scope of a UX Design professional certificate.
The goal was to design a mobile app and the prompt I got was to design a support app for an animal shelter in my hometown.
I know my hometown’s animal shelter and its needs, and I decided to go through with this app based on that.
Screen
Designs
Easy navigation was a key user need to address in the design.
For the home screen, I prioritized a way to select dogs’ profiles and schedule walks.
I created image buttons to represent the dogs available to walk today and a list of cards for dogs’ profiles.
I used commonly known icons with descriptions.

Takeaways
Impact:
The app is intuitive and really thinks about how to meet the user’s needs and flows.
One quote from peer feedback:
“It's a nice thing for the dogs available to walk today to be right on top of the screen. For distracted people like me, it's a plus.”
What I learned:
While designing the support app for the animal shelter, I learned that the first ideas are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback helped me identify my own bias and influenced each iteration of the app’s designs.
Next Steps
1
Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed
2
Conduct more user research to explore and determine any new features or areas in need
